IN THE early 1900s the Vickers factory in Crayford employed thousands of people and the town was largely created for its workers.

In the years following the First World War, the factory changed, diversified and gradually declined, and from a peak of 14,500 in 1918, the workforce had fallen to just 190, when Vickers finally closed its doors in 1985.

The Eastside Community Heritage Project organised a reunion for former Vickers’ workers on Thursday to get them together and talk about old times.

They were also contributing to a project to record the memories of those who made east and south east London a thriving industrial area.

The reunion, was organised at Hall Place, in Bourne Road, Bexley, in conjunction with Bexley Council’s local studies and archive centre.
