THUNDERSTORMS and rain have lashed the borough, flooding homes and bringing down a 40m high tree.

The tree in Mead Road, Chislehurst, was split in half when it was struck by lightning at 12.54pm yesterday afternoon.

Residents in nearby houses were evacuated and the road had to be closed.

Contractors are now in the street cutting down the tree.

The Environment Agency says it is expecting lighter showers today (July 8) and agency officials have decided to take off last night's flood watch for the River Ravensbourne.

Firefighters across the borough were called to countless incidents of flooding in homes yesterday to help residents pump out their houses.

A Bromley Council spokesman said: “It is estimated that we received three months rainfall in three hours which placed severe pressure on the service water drainage systems.

“We have got our drainage crews off their normal work and they are looking at the system and drainage covers.”
