My family and I entered the Stag Theatre, in London Road, Sevenoaks, with excitement and enthusiasm. I was there to do a review for News Shopper and to meet actress and one-time pop star Cheryl Baker, who was playing Aladdin, for an interview after the show.
As we sat in the auditorium waiting for the show to start, I saw families, young and old, with smiles on their faces.
The show opened with colourful sets and bright costumes. Aladdin or should I say Cheryl Baker was great. She sang some of her famous songs adapted into the script, such as Making Your Mind Up, Abenazer.
Kevin Pallister, of Emmerdale fame, played Abenazer. He was very good. Everyone booed and hissed whenever he came on to the stage.
He was funny and kept the audience amused.
Widow Twanky, played by Wyn Calvin, was very funny too, with his lavish costumes. He threw sweets and sprayed us with water and the children enjoyed every bit of it.
After the show, I met with Cheryl Baker. I asked her about her costume and how much fun she must have.
I asked her if she likes playing the male role. She told me the female roles are too girlie for her. Then she explained there is a centuries-old tradition for boy parts to be played by a female.
Cheryl has appeared in many pantomines. She said although it is hectic, she still enjoys doing them.
Overall, Aladdin is a good family show for all ages.
