El Kervan – The Word On The Street The only time I stop talking is when I'm eating or sleeping and I don’t seem to get much of either. I’m getting by on 2 of toast and 3 hours sleep. Anyway. I’m in El Kervan talking with mehmet the proprietor and asked him for a drop of water, I’ve been out since 9am and only had one cup of tea, he asked me if I wanted something to eat, I declined. I’d rather have a fag I thought, when this young girl came in, tall and slim like a stick insect and ordered a HALF pounder with all the trimmings and as if that’s not enough Mehmet serves her up a sack o’ spuds to go with it. Blimey that lot would keep me stacked up for a week. Well that was it, once I feasted my eyes on this monster munch my stomach thought my throat had been cut. I had to take Mehmet up on his offer now. Kept me quiet for half an hour and stopped me in my tracks. During this time a couple of teenage boys, one white one black, came in and brought a can of drink then when they left one of the boys stuck to fingers up to his gob and stuck his tongue out at Mehmet through the window then got on the bus towards Sydenham. Why!? No Idea! It was the white kid and he didn’t even buy anything or say two words. Mehmet tells me they’re not from Penge and hes good with faces. Its this kind of ignorance that pisses me off, I mean Mehmet has been in Penge for a Quarter of a century serving up quality food for the Penge People and a well respected member of the community and doesn’t need or want to be treated this way. I put it down to nothing creative to do with their time. This brings me back to the campaign to save the drum and stop the stabbing.
