An article caught my eye in the paper over the weekend that got me thinking. The article concerned related to a charity photographic exhibition that is being held at London’s SW1 Gallery and famous faces had been asked to select a personal memento which held a special place in their heart to be photographed with.
There were two very contrasting photographs that caught my eye. Both of them related to famous soccerball managers.
The first photograph was of the manager of a team called Manchester Uniteds, Alex Ferguson, who was photographed holding a silver ‘Intercontinental’ cup his team had won. The expression he had on his face was akin to that of a constipated man in a gurning competition. And the reason he gave for being photographed with his chosen item was because “no other British team had won it”.
The second photograph was of a gentleman called Arsene Wenger, who manages a team called Arsenal (maybe even named after him?). Although he too had won countless trophies in his career, he was pictured with a huge smile on his face, holding a pair of his now grown up daughters’ tiny boots. His reason for choosing to be photographed with them was “because they remind me of how small she once was”.
And there you have it, one man quite obviously insane and one man fully clued up, who realises what life is really all about.
And much as we may hate the fact, it’s a canny Frenchman who’s unwittingly pointing out to us what is so very wrong with this country at the moment and reminding us that, ultimately, family is the most important thing in life.
