A PEDESTRIAN is seriously ill in hospital after becoming trapped under a lorry in Lewisham last night (April 28).

The woman is believed to have been walking across the road when she was struck by the vehicle in Lewisham High Street at around 5.30pm.

Firefighters worked to free the casualty before she was taken to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, in the air ambulance which had landed outside the fire station.

She suffered head injuries and her condition is said to be serious but stable.

Police reopened the road at 8.50pm yesterday.

Lewisham central Councillor David Edgerton has been lobbying London Mayor, Boris Johnson to make the junction of Courthill Road and Lewisham High Street safer for pedestrians.

The busy junction has a high volume of pedestrians crossing but does not have any green man lights, he says.

He has previously presented a petition of more than 300 names and raised the issue at Mayor’s question time.

Commenting on the latest accicent, Cllr Dave Edgerton said "This was a serious accident on Tuesday, it emphasised the immediate need for action from Transport for London (TfL).

“The Courthill Road junction with Lewisham High Street has vehicles coming from three directions and pedestrians are left stranded with no crossing facilities, I want pedestrian lights here and will continue to fight for them.

"I am going to confront TfL at the next meeting, I fear that next time we could have a fatality here unless TfL acts.”
