A BOLD bid to steal James Bond-style cars ended in a high-speed car chase across south east London.
Like a scene from a Bond film, dozens of police cars joined the chase to catch the four high-performance Aston Martins stolen from a dealership in Riverhead, near Sevenoaks, on Wednesday last week.
The cars, three DB7s and a Vanquish worth £450,000, were taken at around 2.20am. Shortly afterwards, a police car spotted one of them at Junction 3 of the M25 at Swanley.
They gave chase and pursued the car at speeds of up to 120mph along the A20 towards London.
At Crittalls Corner in Sidcup, other police officers put a spiked stinger device across the road to try and stop the car.
Although the device punctured the car’s tyres, the driver kept going, making his way along North Cray Road to Bexley Village.
He then made an attempt to get onto the London-bound carriageway of the A2. However, he crashed into the central reservation and abandoned the car in Southwold Road, the slip road onto the A2.
The 21-year-old driver tried to escape on foot but was caught and arrested by police.
Dozens of officers were involved in the hunt and two hours later the three other cars were spotted speeding through the northbound Blackwall Tunnel.
The tunnel was closed off by police, trapping the three cars inside. Two of the drivers were arrested and the three cars were recovered. But a third man escaped.
Later the same day, two more Aston Martins — a blue DB7 and a green Merlin, together worth £150,000, were also stolen in Sevenoaks.
One of the cars was later found abandoned in Guildford.
The second is still missing. Police are linking the two thefts.
West Kent police are asking anyone who has information about the thefts, or the driver who escaped, to call them on 01732 771055 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
