RESIDENTS are being advised to take extra care on the roads and at home today after the Met Office issued severe weather warnings for the area.
Reports suggest there could be heavy rain and strong winds in London and the south east.
The advice from Kent Police to motorists is:
- Check the weather forecast and road conditions before you travel;
- Poor weather conditions mean it can be harder for drivers to see pedestrians and cyclists so be vigilant and make sure you can be seen however you are travelling - this includes using lights or wearing high visibility clothing;
- In poor visibility be extra alert for hazards
- Slow down and be aware of side winds. Particular care should be taken if you are towing or if you are driving a high sided vehicle;
- When the roads are wet, it can take twice as long to stop your vehicle - another good reason to keep your speed down;
- Take care when driving on exposed routes such as bridges, or high open roads - delay your journey if possible;
- Make sure you have plenty fuel and basic provisions, such as waterproof clothing and something to drink, before you set out on a journey.
At home, Kent Police advises:
- Fasten loose objects outside, such as ladders or garden furniture which could blow into windows, doors, or even people;
- Keep windows and large doors closed, particularly if one side of the building is very exposed;
- Park vehicles inside a garage where possible, or if parking outside, park away from trees, fences and other objects that could be affected by the wind.
