1911 – Neon advertising signs were patented by George Claude.
1965 – Capital punishment was abolished in Britain.
1982 – The first episode of The Young Ones was shown on the BBC.
2000 – A scheme was launched asking individuals and shops to donate clothes to unemployed people, so they could wear them to job interviews. To kick start the scheme Geri Halliwell and Joanna Lumley donated outfits.
2000 – A club mascot was fired for being too raunchy. Hartlepool’s H’Angus the monkey made rude gestures behind a club hostess at half time.
2005 – Former England goalkeeper David Seaman had his infamous ponytail chopped off live on tv.
