TORY MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford David Evennett has pledged his support for the newly elected President of the USA Barack Obama.

However, Labour has accused Mr Evennett of previously backing Mr Obama's rival John McCain.

Mr Evennett congratulated Mr Obama on Wednesday (November 5) after becoming the first black American to win the presidential election on Tuesday (November 4).

He said: "America voted for change, and I believe that Britain similarly wants a change.

"We have a Labour government that has failed in some many areas over the last 11 years, and is responsible for many of our economic and social problems."

But the Labour candidate for the area Howard Dawber has slammed Mr Evennett for previously supporting rival presidential candidate John McCain.

He said: "David Evennett proudly boasted of his links with Senator John McCain a few months ago in March. Now he is trying to claim that he supported Barack Obama all along.

"Unlike the Conservatives, four of our local members actually went to volunteer with the Obama campaign.

"It’s time for change, David Evennett is right. The change we need is to change the council and to change our inconsistent parliamentary representative."
