FIREFIGHTERS rescued a 70-year-old man from a fire in a flat in Belvedere, Bexley.
Two fire engines and eight firefighters were called to the one-bedroom flat, in Hoddersdon Road, yesterday at about 5.30pm.
The elderly man was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. According to firefighter Phil Dodds, the fire was caused by a cigarette burning plastic on a chair.
He said: "In cases like this it's important to remember to have a working fire alarm and to check it once a week.
"In this case the elderly man had an alarm but it was broken."
