YOUNGSTERS visited a woodland to learn about different types of mushroom and fungi.
Students from Joydens Wood Primary School, Birch Wood Drive, Dartford took part in the activity, which was organised by the charity Groundwork Kent and Medway.
It took place on Thursday.
The 22 children took on the roles of nature detectives, keeping their eyes peeled for wild fungi and mushroom.
Kent naturalist, Steve Kirk was on hand to help them unearth specimens which they then studied.
Paul Koch, Groundwork’s education officer says that the session highlighted the importance of not going out into the woods and picking mushrooms without an expert.
He said: “Rather we should stop and have a good look at this fascinating inhabitant of our woodlands.
“I was surprised by how eager the children were about the whole event.
“It was encouraging to see them learning so much.”
