A NORTHUMBERLAND Heath couple arrested in connection with their baby’s death are “desperate to prove their innocence”.
The man and woman were arrested after police started a murder investigation following the death of their son, a three-month-old boy.
The baby was taken to a hospital in south London at 11.30pm on Friday (October 24) suffering from a serious head injury.
He died the following day at Kings College Hospital, Denmark Hill.
A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Princess Royal Hospital, Farnborough, yesterday (October 28).
Police await the results of further tests, but believe the baby died in suspicious circumstances.
Officers say checks on the boy’s twin sister carried out after his death revealed she was recovering from injuries thought to have been caused by physical abuse.
She was taken into police care.
The man, in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of murder and GBH.
And his wife was arrested on suspicion of GBH and allowing or causing the death of a child.
They have been bailed to return to a south London police station at the end of January.
A source close to the family has spoken of the couple's "devastation" over the loss of their baby son, and says they are determined to prove that they are innocent of any wrongdoing.
"They are understandably distraught, but instead of being able to grieve for their son, they are now being subjected to a traumatic police investigation," the family spokesman said.
He added: "They just want to be left alone to mourn their tragic loss.
“They are in a state of total shock over the events of the last few days.
"Both of them are desperate to prove their innocence.
"Everyone close to this case knows that they are 100 per cent innocent.
“They are naturally good with children and are simply not capable of causing intentional harm to a child."
