HAVE fun but stay safe is this year’s message from Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) during the bonfire season.

Last November the rescue service saw nearly a 60 per cent increase in attendance to fires caused by fireworks compared to the previous year and nearly double the amount of bonfire incidents.

In a bid to prevent firework and bonfire related fires and injuries KFRS is urging people to take extra care this year.

Tips to stay safe this season include only buy fireworks marked BS 7114, don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks, never give sparklers to a child under five, keep pets indoors and follow the instructions on each firework.

Bonfires should always be positioned well away from any buildings, sheds and overhanging branches and kept to a manageable size and evenly built so it collapses inwards as it burns.
