YOUNGSTERS have dressed in national costumes and as their favourite flags for an international evening.

Rangefield Primary School, Glenbow Road, Downham, held the event to mark Black History Month and a week of activities it had been running.

During the week, children played in a steel band, performed in dance workshops and learned about figures from black history to the present day.

Parents were invited to the evening, organised by teacher Samantha Hoyer, on October 23.

They were treated to food from around the world and enjoyed performances from the children, including the school’s own gospel choir.

And they were also paid a visit by Sunderland footballer Kieran Richardson.

Headteacher Sabeena Hasan said: “We were completely overwhelmed by the response from parents.

“It’s been really lovely to try and move things forward and get the whole community involved.”
