A YOUNG boxer has been rewarded for his efforts.
Danny McGuire was presented with a trophy after being named Bexley Boxing Club’s Boxer of the Year.
The winner is chosen through a vote by boxers and coaches.
Bexley mayor Councillor Nick O’Hare presented the cup at the club in North Cray Neighbourhood Centre in Davis Way, off Bedens Road, North Cray.
Danny, of Wood Way, Orpington, joined the club at the age of 17 when he weighed 106 kilos, or more than 16st.
The sports science student is now just under 11st, boxes at welterweight and has won eight of his 10 fights to date.
Next month the 19-year-old will box in the Amateur Boxing Association’s senior novice championship rounds.
Danny’s father and grandfather were boxers and club coach John Gristey says Danny’s success is due to his dedication and discipline.
Councillor O’Hare personally donated the trophy.
He said: “It was nice for me to be able to contribute to one of the best clubs in the south east and give it some support.”
