YOUNGSTERS using off-road and mini-motorbikes to ride on Crayford Marshes and the Thames foreshore had better watch out.

Police using off-road bikes are on their trail.

A team of three officers, sergeants Ross McKibbin and Steve Bateman and PC Dave Abbott, travel wherever they are needed across Bexley.

They have recently been concentrating on the area around Ray Lamb Way, Erith.

Sgt Bateman said: “It is mainly a problem with youngsters using these bikes illegally on the road or on council-owned or open land.”

He says many parents bought mini-motorbikes for their children without realising they cannot be ridden legally except by over-16s who comply with the usual requirements for putting a vehicle on the road, or on private land with the permission of the landowner.

Sgt Batemen added: “We try to educate parents about where these bikes can be ridden but we do have the power to seize bikes ridden illegally.”

He said the team would discourage parents from buying them for their children for Christmas without finding somewhere where it can be ridden legally.
