POLICE in Bexley have been working closely with the Sikh community in the borough to make sure they are not victims of crime during this week’s Diwali celebrations.
During past festivals, officers have noticed a slight rise in burglaries, with criminals attracted by the gold jewellery worn by both men and women during the festivities and who specifically target households.
Leaflets printed in Punjabi and English have been given to the Sikh Temple in Mitchell Close, Belvedere, to hand out to worshippers detailing practical steps they can take to protect their valuables.
Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is a time for new clothes and exchanging gifts as well as being a religious festival.
Detective Sergeant Shelley Barrett, who leads Bexley’s burglary squad, said: “Diwali is time for celebration and the initiative will ensure people enjoy themselves and stay safe.”
She advised: “Keep you valuables safe and your home secure, and lock all your doors and windows at night or when your home is empty.”
