POLICE evacuated shops on a busy high street this afternoon (Oct 27) amid reports that a hand grenade was discovered in Chislehurst.
Shops and restaurants opposite Chislehurst pond were evacuated at around 1.30pm while a bomb disposal team investigated the device, understood to be a hand grenade.
Police closed off parts of Chislehurst High Street, Ashfield Lane, Loop Road and Green Lane for around 30 minutes.
Barbara Smith, 60, who works in The Country Scene pet shop in the high street, was evacuated along with neighbouring businesses.
She said: “There must have been about eight police cars and three ambulances at the scene.
“The fire brigade showed up just as the police were taking the tape down.
“We were evacuated to a nearby car park while police officers went down to the pond.
“I don’t think it was anything serious because they weren’t around for very long.”
