A 92-YEAR-OLD former Spitfire pilot who has cancer has had a dying wish fulfilled - to fly again.

William Sanders, of the Sundridge Court care home, Edward Road, Bromley, flew during the Second World War in the 609 Squadron, which was stationed at Biggin Hill.

The father-of-two, who in 1941 ran out of fuel and crashed his plane into a gun turret at the edge of an airfield in France, had the trip of a lifetime when he flew by helicopter from Denham in Uxbridge to the RAF museum in Hendon, with his 96-year-old wife Mabel.

Mr Sanders said: “The whole day was fantastic, I was overwhelmed and touched by the celebratory events organised for me, and I would like to thank everyone who helped make this such a special day.”
