A GRANDFATHER who almost one year to the day was shoved off his bike has been left jobless and needing pyschotherapy.
Roofer Tony Barrett broke a vertebra and suffered neck and spinal injuries when he fell from his bike while riding along Shire Lane, Keston on October 21 last year.
And the person he claims pushed him off has still not been caught.
The 60-year-old, of Orchard Way, Beckenham, has not been able to work since his injury and is too frightened to get on a bike.
He said: “I am still struggling and going through lots of different emotions.
“I feel very low in myself. I have phases of depression and sadness which takes over my anger, I have not got room for anger.
“This is a very long drawn out injury, I have aches in my neck and head, and pain in my back.
“I have been seeing a pyschotherapist every two weeks.”
The father-of-two was out for a ride with a friend when he suffered the injury and was put in hospital for two weeks, where he had a halo brace screwed into his skull.
He said: “I was going round an acute left hand bend, when all of a sudden out of the blue two hands gave me an almighty shove in my back and across my shoulders, and I catapulted head first on to grass verge.
“All I remember is a great big explosion like a firework but instead of a red flash it was as black as the other side of the universe.
“The pain was as instant as the flash.”
Mr Barrett says he would like to thank the lady who stopped to help him when he fell from his bike.
He said: “To this day I don't know who she was.
“She saved my life and I would truly love to meet her. I want to thank her personally.
“She was my Florence Nightingale, she was an angel.”
Mr Barrett, who was about to go to Scotland to start work putting up hoardings until he suffered the injury, does not think he will ever return to work.
He said: “I've not been able to work since my injury.
“The only income I have is pension credit. It's affected me greatly financially.
“I don't think there's a chance of me getting back to work.
“When you have a disability like I have, it makes it even worse.”
The grandfather-of-three says he is very lucky to have survived.
He added: “I came very close to losing my life, closer than a hair’s breadth away.
“I would like the person who did this to be found.”
Anyone who witnessed this incident or with any information should call Bromley police investigating officer Detective Sergeant James Herron on 020 8284 8844 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
