THOUSANDS of youngsters turned out to vote in Lewisham borough’s election of a young mayor.
Miguel Gutierrez Astudillo, 15, has been elected Lewisham’s fifth young mayor following elections on Wednesday (October 15).
All people aged 11 to 18 living or at school in the borough were eligible to vote and 9,327 youngsters voted.
The student of Addey and Stanhope School, in New Cross Road, New Cross, won after taking 1,705 votes out of a total turn out of 9,327.
The young mayor is responsible for a £25,000 budget to spend on youth orientated schemes and is able to advise the Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock and Lewisham Council’s cabinet.
Miguel said: “I am shocked to have won, although very excited. My campaign team and I concentrated on getting out to as many young people as possible.
“Now we need to repay that support by getting on with the job and helping to represent young people’s views in Lewisham.”
