YOUNGSTERS have been celebrating winning prizes in a tallest sunflower competition.

Schools, pre-schools and children in Gravesend entered the competition organised by Gravesham Council.

Prizes were awarded to the winners by mayor of Gravesham Councillor Ken Jones at a ceremony held at Millbrook Garden Centre.

First place went to Eleanor Foulds for her 353cm tall sunflower.

Second place was awarded to Alice Lean for her 325cm sunflower, while third place went to Brittany Birkett with a 315cm sunflower.

In the schools category Shears Green Primary School White Avenue, Northfleet, Gravesend, won for its 330cm sunflower.

A Gravesham Council spokesman said: “This is the first time we have run the competition but we hope to do it again as it was a major success.”

All the winners received a certificate and Millbrook Garden Centre vouchers.

Eleanor was also awarded a set of junior gardening tools for finishing first.
