A FAMILY acquaintance who committed a “despicable” crime against a disabled man has been jailed.
Unemployed Stephen Sims, aged 43, of Tavy Bridge, Thamesmead, was invited into the home of a 64-year-old Erith man in June this year.
He had recognised Sims as someone who knew his children.
The man suffered a brain haemorrhage 20 years ago, which has left him unable to speak.
Once inside the house, Sims physically restrained the man and demanded money.
He stole £20, which was on the dining room table, and left.
Sims was tracked down by Bexley police’s burglary squad and pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary at Woolwich Crown Court.
He was jailed for 27 months on October 1.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Jemma Guy said: “This is a despicable crime.
“Sims, desperate for cash, targeted this man because he knew him.”
She added: “While he received no physical injuries, the victim was left shaken and will no longer answer the front door, regardless of who the caller is.”
