Passers-by are being invited to actively engage with art and dance as part of a new collaboration between Laban and Deptford public art company, Artmongers.

For Chance to Dance, Artmongers — famous for bringing Deptford the His ‘n’ Hers chimney mural — tasked six recently-graduated choreographers to make their street debut against their latest mural, a trompe l’oeil (3D) piece called Deptford Marbles, at New Cross Square.

Expect to see, inspire and take part in work including Seraina Dejaco’s playful environment for children to play and dance around with professional dancers, Helene Cooper improvising movements based on the bike racks in front of the mural and video choreography from Maria Escarabajal involving accidental urban dance and pigeons.

Armongers artistic director Patricio Forrester said: ‘The world needs its artists to engage with it in a direct way, precipitating new thinking and provoking real, positive change.”

Chance to Dance, Oct 18, New Cross Square, Deptford.
