An award-winning fish and chip shop in Brockley has had the backing of the local community since day one and the owner even still sees “people who came in during the very first week”.
Brockley's Rock owned by Kyriacos Karoulla has recently been awarded the prestigious Gold Seal by the Good Food Awards.
The award is just one of many the shop has earned over the years for its exceptional food and service.
Kyriacos took over the business at 317 Brockley Road 13 years ago, transforming it into a thriving local chippie.
Reflecting on its early days, he said: “The community has supported us since day one really.
“We opened on a Monday thinking it’d be quiet but by Friday, the place was packed with locals. The support from the community has been incredible.
“It’s been a privilege to give back wherever we can, whether through food bank donations, meal vouchers or sponsoring local initiatives.”
The shop’s appeal lies not only in its classic fish and chips but also in its commitment to inclusivity and quality.
The menu offers something for everyone, with homemade fish cakes, vegan dishes and grilled fish options.
Brockley Rock’s dedication to sustainability is a point of pride for Kyri, with all fish responsibly sourced through its partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council.
Kyri and his team ensure that every dish is of the highest standard and labour of love.
He describes the ideal fish and chips as having “the perfect golden crisp outside and a soft, fluffy centre” - a balance achieved through fresh ingredients and good preparation.
The calamari, served with a homemade sweet chilli sauce, is a standout item on the menu and a personal favourite of Kyri’s and he recommends that customers give it a try.
Another fan favourite is the shop’s made tartar sauce, a speciality that has earned rave reviews from customers.
Over the years, Brockley Rock has become more than a fish and chip shop.
It’s a place where locals gather, friendships are formed, and regulars become part of the family.
Kyri said: “We still see people who came in during our very first week.
“We’ve been lucky to grow with the community and meet new faces too, from young families to long-time customers who’ve stayed loyal through the years.”
Kyriacos credits his staff as the backbone of Brockley Rock’s success.
He said: “We couldn’t have done it without their hard work.
“This award is as much for them as it is for everyone who has supported us.”
Brockley Rock is also reaching for even greater heights. It is currently in the running for the National Fish and Chip Awards and hopes to secure a spot in the top 10 shortlist later this year.
The team is determined to keep raising the bar and making the shop a source of pride for the community.
A Google Review reads: “After reviewing several fish and chips venues, I found the bar has now been reset. The fish was light and flakey. The batter light and not greasy.
“Tartar sauce is homemade and the best I've had. We also tried the calamari, which was large, tasty, and not at all chewy.
“Kyriakis and Sotiris are friendly and informative as the different dish types were explained.”
