Chislehurst Library has been closed until summer next year for refurbishments, with a temporary library set to open in its place.

The library is set to close for several months due to ongoing refurbishment works and will not open until summer of next year, although no current reopening date has yet been confirmed.

The space is set to receive an upgrade including an expansion to the children’s library and installation of a new public toilet and baby changing facilities, accessible entrance and windows.

In its place, a new temporary library is set to open on December 16 and will be housed at Hornbrook House on Chislehurst High Street, in partnership with Greenwich Leisure limited (GLL), whilst works are underway.

The site is also set to host craft activities during the festive period.

Bromley Council also confirmed that during the interim period, some activities will be provided at local church halls, with further updates expected at a later date.

This upgrade is part of a borough-wide £11m library repair programme launched by Bromley Council, with both Burnt Ash Library and Beckenham Library currently undergoing repairs to reopen in 2025.

Over the past year, Bromley Borough has already completed refurbishment works on St Paul’s Cray and Southborough libraries, with Orpington being the next library set to close next year for refurbishments.

Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing said: “This important programme is now in full swing as we deliver these essential works across our much-loved library network, with a further temporary library also helping ensure residents have convenient library access across the borough over the festive period.

“Despite ongoing financial challenges across local government, we have prioritised this programme to protect the vital services we deliver through our libraries.”
