I tried one of London’s afternoon teas inspired by South America and it’s a must-do for any jet setters.
If you’re a fan of more contemporary afternoon teas with an exotic twist, then the new travel-inspired afternoon tea at The Hyatt Churchill Hotel’s Montagu Kitchen is worth adding to your checklist.
Currently this modern, stylish hotel is hosting a South American afternoon tea as part of its ongoing travel themed afternoon tea series.
This afternoon tea has so many cute elements to make you feel like you’re on a little trip, from being allocated a ‘Gate number’ for your table, to the little boarding pass they give you with the menu, as well as the afternoon tea itself being presented in a cute steam trunk suitcase.
This experience has the elements of an afternoon tea, with scones and sweet treats, but it’s a bit more contemporary with a Latin American inspired menu, created by the chefs who visited South America to gain inspiration for their creations.
We first began by browsing through the menu on our boarding pass before toasting with a glass of fizz, because that’s the quintessential way to begin any holiday.
The savouries featured a range of classic South American dishes using flavours native to the regions, including a Three Bean Taco with pineapple, lime salsa and sour cream, as well as a Forsforito, a popular ham and cheese pastry dish served commonly throughoutThis was followed by a Vinaigrette Beef Sandwich, which was a personal favourite, and a Corn Break Chicken Sandwich served with fresh guacamole.
Moving onto the sweet treats, which came presented in the wooden suitcase, we first began with scones served with classic strawberry jam and cream, along with a homemade pineapple and lime preserve which was very delicious.
Compared with other afternoon teas, this was definitely one of the most contemporary I’ve had on account of the savouries and scones, and was a pleasant change from traditional afternoon teas which I’ve tried many of.
The sweet treats were definitely some of the best I’ve seen for the attention to detail alone and I will say they definitely did look ‘too good to eat’.
The sweet treats included a mix of citrus, fruity and indulgent flavours that are common in South America, including a Tropical Coconut mousse made with dark chocolate and topped with mango, which actually looked like a coconut cocktail.
This was followed by a Raspberry and Hibiscus Parrot with hibiscus mousse and raspberry jam, before moving on to a Coffee and Tonka Bean sponge.
But my favourite was definitely the Chocolate and Dulce Travel Bag made with decadent chocolate sponge dulce de leche and marzipan.
The experience was finished with a photo taken on a polaroid camera as a ‘souvenir’ of the trip, which I thought was such a cute touch.
This afternoon tea has so much attention to detail and is well worth a visit if you’re looking for something new to try in London.
Afternoon tea at the Montagu Kitchen is served on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 2pm to 5pm, and priced at £65 a person.
