A popular Bexley fish and chip shop is in the running to win a national award - created to commemorate one man’s passion for fish and chips.

The Peter Hill Award, organised by Middleton Foods, was created in memory of the late CEO Peter Hill, who was described to have a “true passion” for the fish and chip business, which is still today one of the UK’s most beloved takeaways.

The Anchor in Bexleyheath is one of six businesses across the UK in the running for the award, with the winners set to be announced at the end of November.

The business was started by owner Ozan Bakici who wanted to “build something special” and serves classics like battered haddock, rock and plaice, along with pies, burgers and chicken dishes.

Owner Ozan Bakici said: “I decided I wanted to get into business where I can use all my skills and build something special.

“We are extremely passionate, and constantly look at ways to improve and maintain our high quality.

“We always make sure the customer has the best experience from cooking, quality, service all the way down to the packaging.”

This year marks the award’s second year running after it was created in 2023 to commemorate the life of Peter Hill, whose passion for the fish and chip industry left “a true legacy”.

Ryan Baker, Sales Manager at Middleton Foods said: “Huge congratulations to The Anchor on being recognised as one of this year’s finalists! We launched The Peter Hill Award last year in memory of our great friend and CEO, Peter Hill and following its tremendous success, we decided to bring it back – even bigger than before.

“We have received a fantastic number of entries, and we are delighted to continue recognising more newcomers to the industry, encourage new talent, promote quality and excellence and give something back to the trade.”
