A library, cinema, and café have won an award for being the best public building.

The Sidcup Storyteller has been named 'the best public or community building' in the regional Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence awards.

The award recognises the work of Bexley’s Building Control and Project Teams, as well as Neilcott Construction Ltd and DRDH.

The building, which re-opened its doors to the public in June 2023, will now be put forward to the national LABC awards in January 2025.

Earlier this year, it won the Pineapple Award, which is given to new builds that make a positive impact on the community.

Councillor Cafer Munur, cabinet member for place shaping, said: "We knew when the building opened for business that we had something special.

"It’s instantly recognisable frontage and town centre spot make it a real coup for the borough.

"I’m delighted that our Building Control team have been recognised for their hard work in bringing this project to life."

The library is run by the council, while the cinema is operated by the London Borough of Bexley in partnership with Really Local Group (RLG).

The cinema shows a range of films, including new releases, family favourites, classic titles, and arthouse specials.

The council's Building Control Team ensures that building works meet government regulations for safety, accessibility and energy efficiency.

The team includes inspectors registered with the Building Safety Regulator as competent to assess the compliance of a range of construction activities.
