A heavily pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed in a crash with an unmarked police car in Eltham. 

The crash occurred at 6.15pm on October 17 on the A20, near to the junction with Kidbrooke Park Road. 

An unmarked police car crashed with a car belonging to a member of the public. 

The crash is the latest fatality in Kidbrooke Park Road this month, after a pedestrian in her 60s was killed in a motorbike crash on October 1

Emergency services including London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service paramedics and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) were dispatched.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade revealed that two people had been trapped following the crash impact. 

They said: "Firefighters worked to release two people who had become trapped as a result of the incident and carried out operations to make the scene safe. 

"The Brigade was first called about the collision at 6.21pm, and the incident was over for crews by 8.09pm. Firefighters from Eltham and Lewisham fire stations attended the scene."

A 38-year-old woman, described as "heavily pregnant" by the Metropolitan Police was found injured inside a car.

Pictures shared to social media have shown what appears to be the wrecks of two cars, with their roofs having been cut off and lying in the road. 

witness to the crash who was at the scene today (October 18) paying tribute to the deceased woman, said she saw the vehicle flip. 

She said: "Her vehicle was hit and it rolled over three times. It’s so sad. I never saw so many police and ambulance before.

"I saw paramedics in the middle of the road."

Another woman who wished to remain anonymous described the scenes as "chaos".

"My thoughts are with the woman’s family.’’

The London Ambulance Service confirmed that the 38-year-old mother-to-be was taken to a major trauma centre as a priority with three other patients. 

The remaining patients included two police officers from the unmarked police car and a man. 

Both officers have since been discharged from the hospital. 

The pregnant woman and her unborn baby both died from injuries sustained in the crash. 

Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

One message read: "My deepest thoughts are with you and your baby, your family and friends. 

"The most awful tragedy that should never have happened. Rest in peace beautiful and your baby."

A man who claimed to be a family friend told the News Shopper she was "the most lovely person ever, the most caring person ever". 

A number of tyre skid marks were pictured at the scene of the incident as the road reopened this morning (October 18), after being closed for more than 12 hours.

Police watchdog, the IOPC, confirmed it had launched an investigation into the Metropolitan Police.

Investigators have been sent to the scene this morning to begin the process of gathering evidence from the crash. 

An appeal was launched for witnesses to the incident to come forward with information and footage.
