A witness to a fatal crash in Eltham involving an unmarked police car which led to the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby has told how her car “rolled over three times”.
The crash took place in Kidbrooke Park Road near Eltham Park Road at around 6.15pm yesterday (October 17).
Police, London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and London’s Air Ambulance all attended.
A heavily pregnant woman, 38, who was also in a car, and her unborn baby died as a result of their injuries.
Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Two officers, who were in the unmarked car, were also taken to hospital following the crash.
They have since been discharged.
The witness, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: ’Her vehicle was hit and it rolled over three times.
“It’s so sad. I never saw so many police and ambulance before.”
Another witness said: ‘’We came rushing out once we heard a loud bang, it was chaos.
“My thoughts are with the woman’s family.’’
Pictures from the scene show a cordon in place surrounding the aftermath of the crash.
Emergency services vehicles with blue lights on can be seen inside the cordon as well as severely damaged cars.
The pictures also show debris scattered across the ground from the incident.
A man, who lives in Kidbrooke Park Road, said: ‘’We saw fire crews cut the roof of the woman’s car to try and save her.”
One man, a close friend of the family added: ‘’ She was the most lovely person ever, the most caring person ever.
“She didn’t deserve it.’’
Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, in charge of policing in Greenwich, said: "My heart goes out to the woman’s family and friends who have lost their loved ones in these tragic circumstances.
"An investigation into the circumstances of this collision is under way by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and we will assist with their enquiries in any way we can.
"A road closure will remain at the scene today and I am grateful for the patience of the local motorists, who will need to use alternative routes."
