A man who tried to kick down the door of a Beckenham barber shop said “I can’t remember doing it because I was on drugs”.

Steven Songhurst, 40, was caught on CCTV trying to break into IB’s Barber Shop on March 9.

The footage showed him riding up to the shop on his bike then stopping outside and pulling out a flashlight to check out what was inside the shop.

He then repeatedly kicked the door with force but was unsuccessful in breaking into the shop and cycled away.

Songhurst appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (September 26) by video link from HMP Lewes.

He pleaded guilty to attempted burglary with intent to do damage.

He declined the opportunity to be represented by a solicitor so was asked to give his own explanation for what he did.

“I’m sorry, I can’t remember doing it because I was on drugs,” Songhurst said.

Songhurst has a long history of offending including 32 previous theft or burglary offences.

District judge Lucy Corrin sentenced Songhurst to eight weeks in prison.
