Thamesmead is a popular place to live which is right on the river Thames despite not having a train station.
Gallions Reach Park is a beautiful part of the area which is home to lots of wildlife.
It has been landscaped around a hill which is actually manmade, constructed from a mound which was built from rubble and soil excavated during construction of a nearby housing estate.
There is a spiral path at the park that leads around the mound all the way to the top so visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view for miles and miles.
Visit Greenwich describes Tump 53 Nature Reserve as a “hidden gem” of the area.
It can be found next to Hawksmoor School in the Moorings.
Tump 53 Nature Reserve was once used to store ammunition back in World War II but it is now a nature reserve home to local wildlife.
According to Visit Greenwich, it’s “a great place for children and young people to learn and explore”.
The nature reserve offers an education programme so that school pupils can link their learning from school to nature.
This teaches kids about habitats and living things, a minibeast hunt and pond dipping, stone age experience, team building, problem solving, map making and orienteering.
Another popular place to spend time in the neighbourhood is Thamesmead Leisure Centre.
It is run by Better Health and boasts a wide range of facilities including a gym, pools, a studio with equipment for fitness classes and a GP referral service.
There are activities for children to enjoy during school holidays there and “senior activities” aimed at over 55-year-olds where people can “get active and meet people”.
While Thamesmead has no train station, TfL has potential plans to extend the DLR into the neighbourhood.
The plans involve an additional DLR stop at Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead and would cost up to £1.7billion.
Public consultation for these plans was launched in February 2024 and if it goes ahead, it could be finished in 2033.
However, Thamesmead neighbours Abbey Wood which is serviced by the Elizabeth Line and Southeastern Rail.
It is an ideal location for families due to the number of schools in the neighbourhood such as Hawksmoor School, Discovery Primary School, Jubilee Primary School and Windrush Primary School among others.
The average price of a property in Thamesmead, according to Rightmove, is £391,098.
Rightmove has found that last year, flats in the area sold for £392,796 and terraced homes sold for £381,329.
