A wanted man has been arrested after reportedly climbing on the roof of a building during a police chase in Abbey Wood.

Officers on patrol in Plumstead Gardens attempted to arrest the suspect after he was identified as wanted on September 14.

The man allegedly ran away and climbed scaffolding onto the roof of a building in Blithdale Road, Abbey Wood at about 11am.

He refused to come down and negotiators were deployed to the scene shortly after.

Multiple cordons were put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident.

At about 11.30pm, the man was safely detained by police and taken to hospital where he was assessed by paramedics.  

He was subsequently arrested and taken to a south London custody suite where he remains.

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “On Saturday, 14 September, officers on patrol in Plumstead Gardens attempted to arrest a man, after he was identified as wanted.

“The man made off from police and following a short foot chase, climbed scaffolding onto the roof of a building in Blithdale Road, Abbey Wood at about 11:00hrs.

“Negotiators were deployed to the scene, after the man refused to come down. LAS were also called to assist following concerns for the man’s welfare.

“Cordons were put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident.

“At about 23:30hrs the man was safely detained by police and taken to hospital where he was assessed by medical professionals.

“He was subsequently arrested and taken to a south London custody suite. He was remanded in custody.”
