A burger at a popular Peckham pub has been crowned as the winning champion burger at the National Burger Awards.
The Whole Beast burger – the creation of Peckham-based pub The Montpelier – was named as the ’Champion of Champions’ at a national burger awards, crowning it as the best burger in the UK.
The pub was one of 30 finalists who attended an event in London for The National Burger Awards to mark their ten-year anniversary.
It was up against contenders including two-time winners Bleecker and El Perro Negro and other popular outfits such as Danny’s Burgers and The Beefy Boys.
The annual event crowns winners across three categories, from Plant-Based Burger of the Year, Burger Chef of the Year and the most coveted prize being the National Burger of the Year award.
A total of 26 victors from each of those rounds from 2015 onwards will now return to the capital to cook-off against each other at Big Penny Social.
Unlike the traditional National Burger Awards, the Champion of Champions cook-off focuses on the signature burgers from each venue, with one recipe being judged.
The Whole Beast won with their signature “Aged Cheeseburger” made with aged beef patty, bread and butter pickles, smoked bone marrow, Whole Beast burger sauce and diced white onions, topped off with American cheese.
Taking to Instagram, The Whole Beast wrote: “So last night we did it, National Burger Awards Champion of Champions with our Aged Cheeseburger. Absolutely mad, we are completely blown away.”
“Something so simple wouldn’t be possible without the right mix of ingredients and equipment.”
