Catford locals have reacted to the “sad” news that a popular Wetherspoon pub in a 19th century building has closed after 24 years in business.
The London & Rye in Rushey Green, Catford, closed on Sunday (August 25), marking the end of the popular pub after 24 years in business, having opened in May 2000.
The pub was situated within a 19th century building on Rushey Green and named after the road connecting London with Rye.
The pub closed after being put up for sale earlier this year by letting agent Savills, with offers starting from £850,000.
Locals took to News Shopper’s Facebook post announcing the closure to express their sadness after the “popular” pub closed.
Gary Fitz wrote: “Very sad indeed. A popular meeting place for all.”
The pub was formerly one of around 800 across the UK owned by the company, and is among 61 Wetherspoon pubs in the UK to close this year.
It is the second pub to close in the south London area this year following the closure of the Asparagus in Battersea.
Julie Tsiricos described the pub as the “best pub in Catford".
Sonny Tabak said: “Catford has become derelict. Although, I do remember this was once a Rumbelows!“
And Nathalie Dempsey wrote: “Had a cracking last night in there last night, going to miss the regulars.”
