Chislehurst residents are being asked to provide feedback on a new pedestrian crossing plan at the War Memorial roundabout.

The proposals aim to address long-standing concerns about the lack of safe crossings around the Chislehurst War Memorial, especially during peak traffic times.

According to the Bromley Council website, the area around the War Memorial on Chislehurst Common experiences heavy foot traffic.

Schools and local businesses are on the south side of the junction, while pedestrians and bus passengers come from the town centre to the north.

The absence of proper crossings has made it difficult for many, especially students from Coopers School and St Nicholas Church of England Primary School, to safely reach their destinations.

Bromley Council has long sought to improve pedestrian crossings at the busy Bromley Road, Bromley Lane, Centre Common Road, and Royal Parade junction—the Chislehurst War Memorial junction.

Previous studies, including one in 2012, found that adding pedestrian signals could lead to severe congestion and safety issues, diverting traffic onto nearby minor streets and potentially disrupting bus services.

A larger plan in 2014 also failed due to high costs and lack of approval from the Trustees of the Common.

In response, the Council now proposes several measures to improve pedestrian safety while minimizing traffic disruption:

• A new signalised pedestrian crossing on Royal Parade, in front of 1/2 Royal Parade, which will result in the loss of eight paid parking bays.

• Another signalised crossing on Bromley Lane, near Kemnal Road.

• A new yellow box at the Bromley Road, Bromley Lane, Royal Parade, and Centre Common Road junction to prevent vehicles from blocking the intersection.

Existing off-street accesses near the new crossings will be maintained, with necessary adjustments to footways and kerbs to ensure accessibility.

Construction is expected to begin in Autumn/Winter 2024, with further details to be provided as the start date approaches.

Residents are encouraged to submit their views on these proposals before the deadline on Monday, August 26, 2024, by emailing traffic@bromley.gov.uk.
