A fire which broke out on the 10th floor at a block of flats in Sydenham is under investigation by London Fire Brigade.

10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled the blaze in Dacres Road at 3.40pm yesterday (August 20).

A man was rescued from the 10th floor who then escaped down a staircase while wearing a fire escape hood.

He was then treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews. 

The flat, which was alight, was destroyed along with part of the roof of the building.

Residents were urged by the brigade to keep windows and doors closed due to the "significant" amount of smoke.

Road closures were in place and people were also advised to avoid the area as the incident was being dealt with.

The fire was brought under control just before 5.20pm.

Crews from Forest Hill, Beckenham, West Norwood, Bromley and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of blaze fire is under investigation.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled a fire at a block of flats on Dacres Road in Sydenham.

“A 10th floor flat was destroyed by fire along with part of the building's roof.

“One man was rescued from a flat on the 10th floor via an internal staircase wearing a fire escape hood by crews in breathing apparatus.

“He was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews. The fire was producing a significant amount of smoke and local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed.

“Road closures were in place and people were asked to avoid the area.

“The Brigade's Control Officers received more than 20 calls about the fire.

“The Brigade was called at 1540 and the fire was brought under control by 1716.

“Crews from Forest Hill, Beckenham, West Norwood, Bromley and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

“A 64 metre turntable ladder was in use as an observation tower, along with the Brigade's drone, providing the Incident Commander with a greater situational awareness of the fire.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
