Market traders in Lewisham have been told by the council to close “earlier than usual” ahead of potential protests.

It comes as police announced that they are aware of plans of a potential solidarity rally or counter-protest in Lewisham this evening (August 7).

Lewisham Market which is usually opened from 9am until 6pm, is now closing at around 5pm.

A spokesperson for Lewisham Council confirmed this does not apply to other businesses in the area.

These shops will operate as normal.

To reassure the community, there also will be more police officers in Lewisham this evening, according Lewisham MPS.

The police have thanked the residents of Lewisham and the officers for their efforts to maintain peace and stand against hate.

Superintendent Charlene Pavitt commented on the "awful images from across the country this week", adding that their hearts go out to all those affected by the "vile instances of racism, thuggery and violence".

She said that the force is working hard to keep Lewisham residents safe and prevent any disorder, adding that anyone who is intent on attacking the community will be arrested.

Violence and attempts to divide the community "will not be accepted and will lead to legal action".

Mayor of Lewisham Brenda Dacres has also released a statement regarding the rumours circulating on social media.

She said: "We are aware of rumours circulating about activity this afternoon in Lewisham.

"We are in constant contact with the Metropolitan Police are aware of a solidarity rally/counter protest scheduled to take place in Lewisham town centre this evening.

"The local police are updating their X (Twitter) account and Facebook with the latest information and reassurance messages."

Superintendent Charlene Pavitt said: "We're aware of plans circulating on social media relating to potential events across Lewisham this evening and know many residents will be appalled and worried.

"We've seen awful images from across the country this week and our hearts go out to all those affected by the vile instances of racism, thuggery and violence.

"We are committed to keeping residents safe and preventing disorder this evening, arresting anyone who is intent on attacking our community.

"Our message to all of those seeking to cause violence and divide our communities is clear - your actions are completely unacceptable and anyone taking part will face the full force of the law.

"Local people can expect to see more officers in the area throughout the evening.

"They will be responding to any concerns and available to speak to residents who may have questions or need help and advice.

"Thank you to the people of Lewisham and our dedicated team of local officers for showing unity and strength in recent times.

“I am proud of our community for standing against all abuse and not letting hate divide us."

A spokesperson for Lewisham Council: “We are aware of a solidarity rally/counter protest scheduled to take place in Lewisham town centre this evening and are working with Police to ensure things remain peaceful.

“There will be more officers in the area, and can speak to residents who might have questions or concerns.”
