Firefighters have been called to a fire involving a solar panel on the roof of a seven-floor block of flats in Lewisham today.
Six fire engines and 40 firefighters responded to a fire on Loampit Vale today (Friday) at 12:19 pm, after the Brigade received 14 calls about the incident.
Loampit Vale was closed in both directions between Jerrard Street and Algernon Road.
Firefighters from Lewisham, Greenwich, Lee Green, and nearby stations attended the scene.
One of the Brigade's 32m ladders was taken to the scene, and firefighters used PVStop on the solar panel.
The closures led to delays in the area and left buses 21, 136, 321 , and 436 on diversion.
The fire was under control by 1.11 pm, and there has been no injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
PVStop, is a black liquid polymer coating designed to cover solar panels like a liquid tarpaulin.
Stored in an extinguisher, it’s sprayed onto solar panels when crews respond to fires.
PVStop works by blocking the sunlight that powers solar panels, so the process of converting light into electricity is stopped, allowing crews to safely respond.
