Thameslink and Southern passengers are being advised to “plan ahead” for nine days over the summer holidays due to a “major” track upgrade in Crystal Palace.
Track repair works are set to take place in the Crystal Palace area by Network Rail for nine days from August 24 until September 1, affecting travel over the bank holiday weekend.
Network Rail has said that the planned works are part of a plan to “reduce train delays and improve passenger experience.”
As part of the works, five sets of switches and crossings, the moveable rails and 1500m of track will be replaced with newer equipment by Network Rail.
Lucy McAuliffe, Network Rail’s Sussex Route Director, said: “Upgraded track and equipment at the busy Crystal Palace junction which controls the movement of trains across south London will help reduce train delays and improve passenger journeys. ”
What services are affected?
Network Rail has advised that from August 24 until September 1 no Southern trails will run at the following stations:
- West Norwood
- Gipsy Hill
- Birkbeck
- Beckenham Junction
In addition, no trains will run from Crystal Palace over the bank holiday weekend between August 24 and August 26.
Trains from Streatham Hill to Norwood Junction and Sydenham will also be impacted due to the work.
For Southern passengers, there will also be a reduced service through the following stations:
- Peckham Rye
- East Dulwich
- North Dulwich
- Tulse Hill
- Norwood Junction

Where can tickets be used?
Passengers are being advised to use their tickets on:
- London Underground
- London Overground
- London Bus services
Passengers are being advised to check before travelling during the nine-day period and to seek alternative routes to complete journeys.
Chris Fowler, Network Operations and Performance Director for Govia Thameslink Railway which operates Southern trains, said: “This is major work that will deliver long-term improvements for our customers but create a significant impact in the short-term.
“Please plan ahead and consider your alternative travel arrangements with London Overground, the Tube and London Buses.”
