Fire crews are currently tackling a three-hectare field fire in Orpington.

Four fire engines and about 25 firefighters are at the scene of the blaze in a field on Charmwood Lane.

The fire has spread over three hectares of hay, but crews say they are making good progress in putting it out.

The Brigade was called to the fire at 12.23pm and crews from Orpington, Bromley, Sidcup, and Biggin Hill fire stations are all on the scene.

The firefighters are getting help from the Brigade's All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicle, which was introduced earlier this year.

This vehicle can pump about 1,000 liters of water and can easily reach remote locations, making it very useful for grass fires.

A Wildfire Support Officer is also at the scene, offering important advice to the Incident Commander.

Firefighters have been given extra hydration packs, sun cream, and protective headwear to stay safe in the hot weather.

The fire brigade reminds everyone to dispose of rubbish properly and ensure cigarettes are fully out, as these can pose a fire risk.

London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner for Prevention and Protection, Craig Carter, said: "We know many Londoners will want to enjoy the nice weather by visiting a park or open space.

“However, we’re asking people not to take disposable barbecues with them as they can cause grass fires, especially in hot weather when the ground is dry.

“These fires are unpredictable and can spread rapidly, causing a significant amount of damage.

"Don’t be tempted to barbecue on your balcony either. Balconies can contain combustible materials which can pose a risk to those barbecuing and others living nearby.

"If you are having a barbecue, never leave it unattended and be careful where it’s positioned. Aim for level ground and keep barbecues well away from anything flammable like sheds, fences, trees or tents."
