Say Goodbye to the 9-to-5

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an evolution of the work lifestyle. This is credited to improvements in the technology deployed in business sectors, and many traditional organisations finally recognising that staff can be effective and productive even if they are not sitting at their desk in the City of London.

As a small support services company operating in the niche space of the Lloyd’s insurance market, Belvedere Mead has always recognised this advantage, and have been a leading force in providing flexible and remote working to those that were unable to commit to a full-time position in the City.

This shift to allowing home based working (work from home), known as hybrid working, has for many become the new normal. Whilst at first glance it may seem ideal for many, is hybrid working truly as flexible as some employers claim it to be?

In 2023, a survey from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) found that 49% of organisations were not even aware of the UK government's change to make the right to request flexible working from day one rather than after 26 weeks of employment.

Hybrid working does offer flexibility in terms of work location, with many believing this to be the key or sole facet. But is it truly flexible? This question has become increasingly pertinent, as more employers are seemingly calling for a return to the office or enforcing very strict WFH policies and procedures.

Elaine Mason, Belvedere Mead’s founder, strongly believes that true flexibility goes beyond the location from which you work. It means enabling employees to operate on working hours suited to their individual lifestyles, providing fluidity in workload, committing to technology that allows collaboration from anywhere, and above all, fostering a company vision and work culture that supports these practices. The idea that simply offering WFH as part of the job description is enough to define flexible working opportunities is ultimately hugely misguided. Elaine was one of the first individuals within the London Insurance Market that recognised that there was a lot of wasted talent, as many organisations refused to accept that part-time or job share opportunities could be part of their workforce.

“Whilst I always worked full time, I was horrified that incredible women, who wanted to combine a career with home-care responsibilities were denied that opportunity. Thankfully, attitudes have moved on, but it is a shame that legislation has had to be brought in to allow a more open-minded way of thinking and I worry that employers will regard true flexibility as a negative rather than a positive attribute.”
