In the heart of Blackfen stands a pub with a rich history dating back to 1931, the George Staples, which aims to be “a home for all and everyone”.
Formerly known as the Woodmen on Blackfen Road, the pub's modern name reportedly honours an old woodman, linking the names together.
Sprawled over a significant capacity of 500 people, the George Staples boasts an impressive 200 seater front garden equipped with five private TV booths.
Pubs in the surrounding areas might be hard-pressed to rival the number of screens in this pub, with a massive total of 23, nine of which are stationed outside.
Their weekly events don't disappoint either, hosting quizzes, club night, live music, and even karaoke, much to the delightful entertainment of regular patrons there.
Not to mention, all live sports including boxing are broadcasted in the venue.
Ricky, the general manager, has been overseeing the daily operations at George Staples for the fourth consecutive Christmas.
Initially from The Star Sidcup place, Ricky now manages this fantastic venue with 17 years of experience under his belt.
Ricky told the News Shopper: “My mission was to make the pub a home for all and everyone.
“A site that can deliver food drink sports and late night together in Harmoney.
“I wanted us to be not just a pub on a crossroads.”
Ricky works diligently alongside Tilly, Maxine, Joe, and Kelly in the daily running of the pub and its teams.
The George Staples doesn't disappoint your tastebuds either.
Everything from real ales, standard and premium lagers, over 20 different gins, cocktails served 241 all day, to a wide range of dishes in the food menu are available.
The food primarily consists of pub classics and quick eats, all sized reasonably and delivering excellent value.
What's more, they even cater to their younger patrons, offering a fantastic children’s menu and a variety of soft drinks.
Event and fate days to cater to families, special arrangements on bank holidays and a visit from a friendly reindeer and his family during Christmas are all part of their plans.
The variety of ales keeps changing weekly, as the pub gets new selections delivered straight from local breweries.
All these features truly set the George Staples apart, making it not only a place where you can unwind with a pint, but also a venue that offers a well-rounded experience, making it a great pub to keep returning to.
A Google Review for the pub reads: “This was a real surprise for us...visiting The George Staples that was recently renovated turned out to be a great find.
“Beautifully redone inside and with an extensive food menu, this is well worth a visit.
“They are great supporters of real ale and cider and at the time of writing this review had five real ales on and around seven different ciders.
“It's also worth noting they are great with kids and are a dog friendly pub. Very impressed with the staff overall and we're lovely, helpful people.
“Thanks to the whole team for such a great visit.”
