Jaffa Cakes - are they cakes or biscuits? The hotly debated question has been dividing the nation for years.

The household favourite, made up of sponge, orange jelly and topped with dark chocolate, has sparked passionate debates, from kids in the playground to colleagues in the office.

Broadcaster Jamie East shared a picture on X from this year’s Glastonbury festival of a huge flag with the statement: “Jaffa Cakes are biscuits”, which led to one X user admitting: “The 'Jaffa Cakes ARE biscuits flag' flying at the front of the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury has sparked a row in our household.”

Newspapers have even weighed in on the hot topic, and it’s even made TV with Happy Mondays’ Bez and Shaun Ryder going back and forth on Celebrity Gogglebox.

But now, the argument has been settled once and for all, as McVitie's has issued a statement after an “artistic disagreement” over an advert celebrating its history.

It comes after a Jaffa Cakes mural, painted to celebrate its ties with the local community in Stockport, received a ‘makeover’ this week when one overzealous biscuit fan changed Jaffa Cakes to Jaffa Biscuits.

The brand has since corrected the artwork back to Jaffa Cakes, while Adam Woolf at McVitie’s, said: ‘We love that our brand gets the nation talking, even arguing, about whether it is a cake or a biscuit. However, we can confirm, Jaffa Cakes are definitely cakes! After all, the clue is on the box…’
