Plans for a new retirement community have been put forward to replace a Beckenham apartment block which was left derelict after a fire.

McCarthy Stone, a developer of retirement communities, plans to redevelop Conifer House in Southend Road, Beckenham.

The development includes 49 specially designed one and two-bedroom retirement apartments, reflecting local architectural themes.

The site is currently home to a derelict, three-storey apartment block damaged by fire.

The company has started community consultations to capture local views on the proposals.

These comments stand a chance of influencing the final plan before submission to the London Borough of Bromley.

The proposals are open to the public until July 22, 2024 via a dedicated online platform, and a physical exhibition will also be held at Lea Wilson Hall, Christ Church Beckenham on July 16, from 3pm to 7pm.

The spot is well-placed being within a stone’s throw from public transport, shops and services, the developers believe this will make it an excellent choice for a Retirement Living development.

The plans for the property include a shared communal lounge, hotel-style guest suite, mobility scooter storage and enjoyably landscaped gardens.

Mark Bryan, Divisional Development Director for McCarthy Stone London and South East, said: “The exhibition provides us with an important opportunity to understand feedback on our proposals. That way, we can incorporate and address the views of the local community into our plans for the site, where possible.

“It is important that communities cater to the needs of all their residents. Our plans provide a fantastic opportunity to deliver much-needed specialist accommodation in Beckenham, whilst regenerating a brownfield site, close to the new shops and facilities.

“This development would improve housing choice for older people in the local area, within a vibrant community of like-minded individuals within the setting of an intergenerational site and free up homes in the wider housing market.”
