Officers have said that they do not believe that an attack at a Sikh place of worship in Gravesend is terrorism-related.

The incident occurred at the Sri Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara at 8.10pm on July 11.

It was reported there was a disturbance inside the premise before two women were allegedly attacked outside with a blade.

Kent Police arrived on the scene and arrested the local teenager.

Officers found a bladed weapon after the incident.

Police have said that they are treating the attack as religiously aggravated but not terror-related.

The 17-year-old boy was charged on July 13, with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and additional offences relating to threats and possession of a bladed weapon.

Later the same day, he appeared before Maidstone Crown Court, where attempted grievous bodily harm was added to the charges.

He was bailed, then immediately detained for a mental health assessment.

His next court appearance will be at Medway Youth Court on July 18.

North Kent Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Angie Chapman, said: “This is an isolated incident and our initial enquiries suggest it is not terrorism-related.

“We are treating it as religiously aggravated. It was upsetting for local people and our officers will remain on patrol in the area for reassurance and engagement with the community.

“I would like to thank the local community for their ongoing support and assistance while this investigation continues.”
