Labour's Janet Daby, representing the Labour Party, has held a majority in Lewisham East and will continue to represent the constituency as its MP.

The incumbent’s victory comes after a night of volunteers counting ballots as part of the 2024 UK General Election.

The total turnout for this election in Lewisham East was 40,637, and Ms Daby received 23,646 votes.

The room erupted into roaring cheers for Ms Daby when she was announced as the constituency winner.

Ms Daby MP said: “We have had 14 years of chaos from the Tory government and it really is time for change and I will work tirelessly to represent my constituents of Lewisham East.

“I thank all the people that have voted, put their trust in me and their trust in labour.”

She went on to speak about her priorities for Lewisham, adding: “Labour needs to, and will, get Britain the change that we so desperately need.

“We need an NHS that’s fit for purpose.

“We need to bring down the high energy bills and we really need to focus on making sure people can afford their food, rent and so on.

“Young people need support with education, with skills and with jobs and we need more homes.”

Volunteers began counting the votes at 10pm yesterday (Thursday, July 4) when the polls closed.

Voters across Lewisham as a borough have historically favoured the Labour Party, with Labour taking seats across all Lewisham constituencies in the 2019 General Election – Deptford, Lewisham West and Penge, Dulwich and West Norwood.

An MP from the Labour Party has been elected in Lewisham since 1992.
