A Sidcup micropub named after the iconic London black cab driver is continuing to charm locals and building a friendly community.
Since opening its doors in August 2016, The Hackney Carriage has become a cherished part of Sidcup.
The micropub at 165 Station Road stands out for its dedication to old-fashioned pub standards, earning it the title of Cider Pub of the Year in both 2017 and 2018.
The Hackney Carriage was once a former school uniform shop, before being transformed into the pub, founded by owner Liz Twort.
Liz told the News Shopper: “We have had many newborn babies and puppies come along and also been responsible for a few match-making relationships.
“We are very community-led and I have a fab team who give amazing customer service.
“The pub is named after my husband’s profession as a black cab driver. Many black cab drivers come in and like to share their interesting stories.
“Both our bartenders are very friendly and the pub has been party to many people meeting and becoming firm friends.”
The Hackney Carriage has garnered a loyal customer base with its impressive selection of over 20 ciders as well as a range of real ales, all sourced from small independent breweries.
Liz prides herself on creating a welcoming and relaxed environment and The Hackney Carriage enforces a no gambling, no music, and no mobile phone conversations policy.
This is so that patrons can enjoy their drinks and conversations in a peaceful setting, reminiscent of traditional British pubs.
The Hackney Carriage features contemporary furnishings, high seating, and two toilets, providing a more comfortable and stylish atmosphere.
The pub is dog-friendly and welcomes children until 7pm, making it a family-friendly spot.
Liz won the Entrepreneur of the Year award in Bexley in 2017 and serves on the local Sidcup BID board, where she works to promote Sidcup and give back to the community.
The Hackney Carriage offers more than just cider and ale. Patrons can also enjoy a selection of craft beers, wine, Prosecco, and spirits, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
The tight-knit community of regulars are no stranger to Liz's light-hearted demeanour, often finding amusement in directing her back to her forgotten phone or the odd occasions when she's left the dog behind.
As The Hackney Carriage celebrates its eighth anniversary, it continues to thrive as a beloved local.
For those seeking a traditional pub experience with a modern twist, The Hackney Carriage is the place to be.
